MQA Suggestions IPT Offer Short Courses for Employee Skill Levels

Local higher education institutions (IPT) are advised to be more proactive in offering short-term micro-credentials courses, especially to graduates who have completed their studies for more than 20 years.

Chief Executive Officer of the Malaysian Qualification Agency (MQA), Prof. Datuk Dr. Mohammad Shatar Sabran said, in this era of rapidly moving technology, many changes have certainly occurred since these groups finished their respective studies.

Clearly, IPT needs to see this situation as an opportunity to offer 'something' to groups who have long left higher education to increase their knowledge and skills.

"One way is to provide short courses in the form of micro-credentials so that they can equip themselves with the latest technology and current demands of industry in various fields.

"Certainly by taking this short course it will further increase their effectiveness in carrying out daily tasks at their respective workplaces.

"This initiative will directly increase their productivity in line with the country's desire to become a developed and high-income country," he said in a statement.

Micro-credentials are generally a course or learning package, aimed at recognizing the improvement of an individual's specific expertise and competence in various fields.

Micro-credentials offers primarily working individuals the opportunity to improve specific skills required by employers and industry in a short period of time.

Commenting further, Mohammad Shatar said, IPT needs to collaborate more actively with industry to find out the latest needs of employers.

If this is not done, he said, it is likely that all the skills they have had for a long time will no longer be relevant.

"This is also to promote flexible education that supports the lifelong learning (PSH) agenda and the workforce in this country can also refer to the Micro-credentials Portal developed by MQA.

"The portal is a one-stop center and main referral source for students and prospective students to obtain information regarding the micro-credentials program offered by IPT in Malaysia," he said.
