Local higher education institutions (HEIs) need to stop offering executive programmes for professionals that use programme names such as those in the Malaysian Qualifications Framework (MQF) for certificate, diploma, bachelor's and master's degrees, but are not accredited. Chief Executive Officer of the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA), Prof. Datuk Dr. Mohammad Shatar Sabran said, his party does not prevent any IPT from offering executive programmes, but its offerings must comply with current regulations such as obtaining approval from the authorities, in addition to obtaining accreditation and complying with MQF. He said, MQA does not want HEIs to offer programmes using the MQF qualification designation but no accreditation because they do not want to cause confusion among the community. "This programme is branded with various names including executive diploma, industrial diploma, professional diploma and many more. “However, there are executive diplomas, executive masters accredited by MQA, but not all.
"The public is advised to check the Malaysian Qualifications Register (MQR) at www2.mqa.gov.my/mqr/ before deciding to follow any executive or professional programme," he said. Commenting further, Mohammad Shatar said that graduates of local programmes that are not accredited by MQA usually face difficulties in getting a job because they are not trusted by employers because MQA accreditation is one of the prerequisites for applying for public service jobs. On the other hand, he said, his side has no problem with offering programmes that meet the MQF requirements using the name executive, for example an executive diploma with 90 credit hours or an executive master with 40 credit hours. "In addition to executive programmes, Malaysians can now take the opportunity to follow micro-credential courses because this is one of the future education modes, especially for the purpose of upskilling and reskilling. "In addition to promoting flexible education that supports the lifelong learning agenda (PSH), this initiative also helps boost the country's image to become a global education hub as desired by the Minister of Higher Education, Datuk Seri Diraja Dr. Zambry Abdul Kadir," he said.
