Mastery of a Foreign Language Increases the Quality of the Country's Higher Education

SEPANG: Mastery of multiple languages among students can boost the quality of the country's higher education.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA), Prof Datuk Dr Mohammad Shatar Sabran, said that mastery of a foreign language is one of the advantages students must have in today's challenging world.

He said, currently, academic qualifications alone do not guarantee that graduates will be able to get job opportunities because generally most of our society has good academic qualifications.

"The added value of graduates in the form of alternative skills is very necessary and mastery of a foreign language is something that should be considered.

"Students who master three to four languages will certainly be desired by employers when students appear for interviews after graduation because this group will give an advantage to the organization," he said.

Mohammad Shatar said, students are encouraged to complete themselves by mastering three languages after Malay or their respective mother tongue.

"Don't just hope that academic qualifications through a degree will help you succeed in your career in the future because things are not the same as they used to be.

"Opportunities are wider for them (students) When they are able to master many foreign languages, they can even apply to work in international companies, multinationals or work abroad," he said.

Commenting further, he said that institutions of higher education (HEIs) can choose a foreign language that they want to use as a foreign language so that eventually it will become a habit among employers if they want to find graduates who are proficient in a certain language, they can go to the HEIs involved.

He said, the quality of IPT and local graduates will definitely be able to be improved to a level that is even more proud in the global higher education arena and will be sought after by employers to find new talent in their companies.

"We need to acknowledge that language diversity is a valuable asset that can enrich and strengthen the country's position in the international arena.

"If this matter can be succeeded comprehensively, surely the efforts to make Malaysia a hub of talent and knowledge or a center of universal knowledge will be realized in line with the wishes of the Minister of Education, Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin," he said.
