Promotion Criteria Must Be Parallel to Student Quality

Article Summary

Recommendation was made so that teaching staff or lecturers put more emphasis on the quality of students produce from their respective institutions.

Promotion criteria at local (IPT) higher education institutions need to be in line with the main agenda of the establishment of the university which is to produce excellent students and graduates.

Chief Executive Officer of the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA), Prof. Datuk Dr. Mohammad Shatar Sabran said that the words are in line with the first leap of the Malaysian Education Development Plan (Higher Education) or PPPM (PT) 2015-2025 which is to produce holistic, entrepreneurial and balanced graduates.

He said that the recommendation was made so that teaching staff or lecturers put more emphasis on the quality of students produced from their respective institutions.

“ There is no point if a lecturer excels in research, high-impact journal writing and various personal achievements but the quality of his students does not reach the level it should be.

“ This is important because the future of the country depends on our young generation today, if students and graduates are produced of poor quality, the country will suffer the consequences,” said.

Mohammad Shatar said, because that matter is very important, for the first time, the Ministry of Higher Education (KPT) organised the International Young Future Leaders Summit 2024 (iFUTURE 2024) programme which brought together student leaders from local and abroad, recently.

He said the three-day programme was attended by 1,000 student leaders from 47 countries who provided vehicles and opportunities for students to highlight their leadership talents, improve the quality of their knowledge, strengthen public speaking skills and abilities.

He said, the focus approach on the quality of the graduates is also in line with the five Main Focuses of the Ministry of Education and Culture for the year 2024, which is the Preparation of the National Best Talent shared by the Minister of Higher Education, Datuk Seri Diraja Dr. Zambry Abd Kadir.

According to him, it is time for local HEIs to review the promotion criteria so that priority is given to the agenda of producing quality students and graduates as one of the main characteristics.

“ It is hoped that the lecturer welcomes this desire to produce excellent students with soul and not just want to finish the syllabus taught.

“ This excellence will not be achieved without the commitment and seriousness of the teaching staff,” said.
