A total of 28 local universities are listed in the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings 2025 thus proving the quality of the country's world-class higher education. Chief Executive Officer of the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA), Prof. Datuk Dr. Mohammad Shatar Sabran said that the proud achievement shows that higher education institutions (HEIs) in Malaysia now "stand as high, sit as low" as other international universities. This also reflects the global community's trust in the country's higher education performance, therefore it is hoped that the community in this country has confidence in local HEIs whether public or private because in the context of quality, MQA will always monitor and not compromise in the regulatory process. He said, the perception that foreign universities are of higher quality than local HEIs is no longer relevant because the rating issued by QS shows that local HEIs are on par with global higher education providers, and even international accreditation body partners also share the same view. "Once upon a time, maybe we were still lagging behind because the number of local universities was still small and the quality was not as good as it is now, which made our society race to send children abroad. "However, in the context of quality, we are now at par with international HEIs, and some of our universities are even better than foreign HEIs," he said when commenting on the achievements of local HEIs in the recently announced QS World University Rankings 2025. Commenting further, Mohammad Shatar said, it is even more proud when the country's oldest university, Universiti Malaya (UM) continues to be in the top 100 universities in the world. He said, it is not easy to remain in the best group in the world, but UM has proven it for seven consecutive years, and is even in a better position than most foreign HEIs. "Congratulations to the five national research universities namely UM, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) for remaining in the world's top 200. "As the sole body that oversees the national higher education accreditation, MQA is always committed to ensuring that the image and quality of Malaysian higher education is constantly improved from time to time, for example through the micro-credentials short course flexible education initiative, Accreditation of Prior Experience Learning (APEL) as well as work-based learning (WBL) 2.0," he said.
